Don Beyer Insider Trading Claims: What His Stock Trades Show
Politician Stock Tracker

Don Beyer insider trading claims sometimes follow his long House career representing Northern Virginia. We do not claim he broke the law. Public STOCK Act data shows a milder story than many headlines: disclosed buys slightly beat the S&P 500, and his trade timing sits above a coin flip—with a large, high-confidence sample.
The short answer
| Question | What our data shows |
|---|---|
| Did his reported buys beat the market? | Yes, modestly. About 155% vs about 142% for the S&P 500 on the same dates |
| Did he pick unusually good days to trade? | Somewhat. About 57% overall (50% is pure luck) |
So filings show a small return edge and a modest timing edge—not a dramatic “always knows the news” profile.
Did his buys beat the market?
Here's how we measure it. We take the stock purchases Beyer disclosed, estimate how those buys did, and compare that to buying the S&P 500 (via SPY, a fund that tracks the index) with the same money on the same days.
On 287 purchases we could price since November 2019, Beyer's disclosed buys returned about 155%. The matched S&P 500 path returned about 142%. He came out ahead—but by a narrower margin than names like Ron Wyden or Nancy Pelosi.
Stocks he discloses often include NEE, GS, EL, AAPL, FANUF, and TGT—a mix of utilities, finance, consumer, and tech.

One caveat: this is only disclosed stock purchases—not his full net worth, and not every sale.
Did he time the market?
"Timing" asks: when Beyer bought or sold a stock, was that a better day than a random day for that same stock?
Think of 50% as a coin flip.
| Measure | Score | vs 50% luck |
|---|---|---|
| Overall | 57% | +7 points |
| Buys | 55% | +5 points |
| Sells | 59% | +9 points |
- We scored 597 trades across 63 stocks (high confidence).
57% overall is one of the clearer above-chance timing scores among high-volume House members in our set—still not extreme, but more than noise. Both buys and sells sit modestly above 50%.

Putting both together
- Market returns on buys: slightly ahead of the S&P 500.
- Trade timing: modestly above a coin flip, with a large sample.
That combination is more balanced than the classic Pelosi pattern (huge returns, average timing) or the busy-trader pattern (weak returns, average timing). It still does not prove insider information—and it does not disprove it. It shows where public filings point.
