Ron Wyden Insider Trading Claims: What His Stock Trades Show

Politician Stock Tracker

Ron Wyden insider trading claims often follow his long Senate career and Finance Committee role. We do not claim he broke the law. Public STOCK Act data shows a familiar split: his disclosed buys beat the S&P 500 by a wide margin—while his trade timing looks close to a coin flip.

The short answer

Question What our data shows
Did his reported buys beat the market? Yes. About 468% vs about 161% for the S&P 500 on the same dates (2.9×)
Did he pick unusually good days to trade? Not really. About 52% overall (50% is pure luck)

So the story in the filings looks more like owning strong stocks over time—not a clear “perfect day” trading edge.

Did his buys beat the market?

Here's how we measure it. We take the stock purchases Wyden disclosed, estimate how those buys did, and compare that to buying the S&P 500 (via SPY, a fund that tracks the index) with the same money on the same days.

On 142 purchases we could price since April 2020, Wyden's disclosed buys returned about 468%. The matched S&P 500 path returned about 161%. That is a large win—about 2.9× the benchmark.

Stocks he discloses often include NVDA, AAPL, AMZN, MSFT, UPS, and DIS—heavy mega-cap tech and familiar consumer names. Holding those through a strong market for tech explains a lot of the gap.

One caveat: this is only disclosed stock purchases—not his full net worth, and not every sale.

Did he time the market?

"Timing" asks: when Wyden bought or sold a stock, was that a better day than a random day for that same stock?

Think of 50% as a coin flip.

Measure Score vs 50% luck
Overall 52% +2 points
Buys 50% even
Sells 59% +9 points
  • We scored 213 trades across 51 stocks (medium confidence).

52% overall is essentially noise around a coin flip. Buy timing at 50% does not look like someone who systematically bought right before jumps. Sell timing at 59% is somewhat better—but not the kind of gap that proves a hidden calendar edge.

Ron Wyden stock trade timing vs random luck on the same stocks

Putting both together

  • Market returns on buys: clearly ahead of the S&P 500.
  • Trade timing: near a coin flip overall.

That is close to the Nancy Pelosi pattern: strong long-run results on disclosed buys, unremarkable timing. Neither proves nor disproves wrongdoing.
